At home teeth straightening: Why Straight Teeth Direct is still the most popular choice for adults

10 years of at home teeth straightening for adults

At home teeth straightening for adults is more popular than ever, and it’s easy to see why: it lets you straighten your teeth with clear aligners from home, guided remotely by a dentist – with no clinic visits required. Straight Teeth Direct™ has been doing exactly that since 2016. This year, we’re marking 10 years of dentist-led, fully monitored at-home teeth straightening for adults across the UK, Europe and 60+ countries.

A lot has changed in a decade. Our approach hasn’t.

What is at-home teeth straightening?

At-home teeth straightening is a way to correct mild to moderate crowding, spacing or protrusion using a series of custom clear aligners – without attending a clinic in person. Instead of repeat appointments, your treatment is planned and monitored remotely by a dentist through a secure online platform.

With Straight Teeth Direct™, the process is built around clinical oversight from the very first step:

  • You start with a free e-consultation – five photos and a few questions, reviewed by a dentist.
  • You take your own impressions at home using a SmileBox™ kit, guided by your assigned dentist.
  • You receive a personalised treatment plan and a 3D simulation of your expected results before committing to anything.
  • Your custom aligners arrive in stages, and your dentist monitors your progress the whole way through.

The aligners themselves are clear, removable and barely noticeable – so most people won’t know you’re wearing them.

Is at-home teeth straightening suitable for adults?

Teeth straightening for adults is exactly what at-home aligners are made for. It’s designed to improve mild to moderate alignment issues – crowding, gaps, or front teeth that stick out. It’s a popular choice for people who didn’t have braces as teenagers, whose teeth have shifted over the years, or who simply want a discreet option that fits around work and life.

It isn’t for everyone, and we’ll always tell you honestly if it isn’t right for you. Straight Teeth Direct™ is for adults only (not children), and more complex cases are referred to clinics. Of course, your suitability is confirmed by a dentist during your free e-consultation – before you pay anything.

And because treatment is fully monitored by a dentist, you get the reassurance that someone qualified is checking your progress at every stage – something that no (dangerous!) “DIY” option can claim.

A decade of at-home teeth straightening

When we launched in 2016, the idea was simple: orthodontic care should be more accessible, more transparent and properly supported – not hidden behind clinics or inflated in cost.

Ten years later, we’re still here. Still dentist-led. Still helping adults straighten their teeth from home every day.

Over that decade we’ve:

  • connected thousands of people to dentists and orthodontists remotely
  • supported users across 60+ countries
  • kept our price fixed and our process honest

We were part of the early shift to remote aligners – but we never treated it as a shortcut. From day one, the priority was clinical quality first.

Why experience and continuity matter

The aligner world has moved fast. New companies, new models, big promises – and not all of them lasted. In December 2023, Smile Direct Club wound down its global operations after filing for bankruptcy, leaving customers mid-treatment with no support, no remaining aligners and, in many cases, no retainers to hold their results in place.

When a provider disappears like that, your teeth don’t simply stay where they are – they can drift back. Orthodontics doesn’t end when a company does, which is exactly why continuity matters.

That’s the gap we’ve always worked to avoid. Ten years of consistent, dentist-led treatment means the support behind your smile is still there when you need it – during treatment and long after.

Left without retainers or support after Smile Direct Club closed?

If your treatment was cut short – whether by Smile Direct Club’s closure or another provider stopping – you’re not stuck. We’re now helping more people than ever pick up where they left off. That might mean:

  • replacing retainers that have worn out or were never delivered
  • getting back on track with a fresh re-treatment plan
  • assessing teeth that have shifted since you stopped wearing your aligners
  • finally completing a treatment that was abandoned partway through

Wherever you got to, the first step is the same as for everyone else: a free e-consultation, reviewed by a dentist, who’ll tell you honestly what’s possible from here.

How at-home teeth straightening works, step by step

1. Free e-consultation. Upload photos of your smile and answer a few questions. A dentist reviews them and confirms whether remote treatment can help – usually within 48h, often sooner.

2. SmileBox™ impression kit (£69 / €79). Take your impressions at home, guided by your dentist. We turn them into a 3D model, a personalised Straight Teeth Plan and a simulation of your expected results.

3. Your treatment plan. Review your plan and 3D preview before you decide. There’s no obligation to continue.

4. StraightBox™ aligners. Your custom aligners are delivered to your door in stages.

5. Monitoring and retainers. Your dentist tracks your progress through your account, and a free set of retainers is included to protect your results at the end.

Most treatments take around 5 to 9 months, though this varies from person to person.

How much does at-home teeth straightening cost?

Straight Teeth Direct™ offers a fixed, all-inclusive price – no hidden costs, no matter how many aligners you need. Full treatment is £1,790 (2,099€) when paid in full, with interest-free payment plans available and no credit checks. That’s up to 70% less than typical clinic prices, which often run into several thousand pounds.

The price includes your aligners, dentist monitoring throughout, one round of refinements if needed, and a free set of retainers at the end.

And because it’s our 10th year, there’s a special anniversary saving to be had – we’ll send it to you after your e-consultation if you’re interested in proceeding 🙂

Frequently asked questions

Is at-home teeth straightening safe? With Straight Teeth Direct™, treatment is planned and monitored by a dentist throughout, and your suitability is confirmed before you pay. We ask for recent X-rays and gum health information for safety, and recommend continuing your routine dental check-ups during treatment.

How long does at-home teeth straightening take? Most people complete treatment in around 5 to 9 months, though your exact timeline depends on your teeth and is confirmed in your personalised plan.

Will the aligners be noticeable? The clear aligners are removable and barely visible, so most people won’t notice you’re wearing them.

Can I straighten my teeth at home as an adult? Yes – at-home teeth straightening for adults is exactly what Straight Teeth Direct™ specialises in, for mild to moderate alignment issues. Children’s treatment isn’t offered.

I was a Smile Direct Club customer left mid-treatment. Can you help? Yes. Since Smile Direct Club closed in 2023, we’ve helped many former customers get back on track – with replacement retainers, fresh re-treatment plans, and honest assessments of where their teeth are now. Start with a free e-consultation and a dentist will advise on the best next step.

What happens if my teeth need more correction than expected? One round of refinement aligners is included in the fixed price if your monitoring dentist prescribes them to reach your agreed result.
